I’ve also thought of using a motion detector in my house, and in fact I do – but I was where you are right now, looking for something affordable and trustworthy. Small rooms don’t make much difference from bigger rooms as these devices usually cover a big area in any case. And don’t just buy a motion sensor – you need the whole package in order to have a working protection for your home. Sensors (motion detectors) are mostly small – and usually placed in the top corner of a room, opposite a door or a window (or both). The way I see it, if you want maximum security – place 4 sensors in each corner of the room and there will be a very little chance of someone getting around that.

A motion detector that works and is cheap

It is a reality – if it was a fiction, you wouldn’t be looking for it right now. Before I go into more product details, I’d actually like to tell you a little story…

When I was a teenager in my early days, I got hired to guard an office during a few lonely nights. Having nothing better to do I tried to bypass the security systems in place just to see if I could figure out how they work and if there were any weaknesses in them. Sure enough, I found immediately that if you more really slowly, the motion detectors don’t notice you and you can get to your target and out unnoticed.

The second finding was that if you crawl on the ground – with your face towards the sensor (so you could keep a sharp eye on it) – it doesn’t notice you.. which was logical – some of them are built so that a cat or a dog would not cause false alarms.I got in and out of a room on the ground, and the alarm did not get activated. I remembered this lesson for the rest of my life!

Now, what does that mean to you? What kind of motion detector should you be looking for?

Definitely one which does not have the “feature” of not detecting cats or dogs – that is, if you don’t have any pets. Because that is not a feature, it’s a huge vulnerability and you don’t want vulnerable security systems anywhere near you!

Cheap ones – stay clear. Depending on your sense for “cheap” of course – for some $20 is too much and for others $1000 is not enough quality… you could also trust me and my expertise – and read ahead.

What if you could buy a motion detector sensor + the alarm + a 4GB motion-activated camera for under $80?

I friend of mine robbed, just as many others a couple of years ago – and he learned his lesson. This is one of the protections they own now – and it’s plain awesome. It was a breeze to install and I am now recommending it to all my customers. Get one, two, or as many as you want – they work like a charm!

Actually, in case you missed the link – http://www.aliexpress.com/product-gs/465273773-PIR-ALARM-motion-detection-PIR-detector-manufacturer-4GB-capability-MDS-6501-wholesalers.html

Just read the specs and decide for yourself. If I were you, I’d get one until they last, you know? A motion detector of this quality and features number is rarely seen on the market at that price.

It’s alarming how much spam you can find on the net when searching for good alarm systems. You have to sift through dozens, hundreds of websites – some e-commerce, some even useless with zero good content. It will greatly help me offer quality content if you let me know in the comments what were you looking for when you got to this post! I want to help my readers as much as possible with every single post I shoot on the net.

When considering security for your home, you need to consider all types of risks – fire alarms, smoke alarms, burglar alarms – and it’s best to find a provider who does all that and can sell you everything you need from one brand – which is important for quality and compatibility reasons. You should really steer off from DIY systems as they tend to break much more often and you can’t blame anyone for their failure except yourself and the person who built the initial design and published it on the web. Which won’t help in the end.

The top 5 alarm security system manufacturers are (I’m not getting paid to recommend any of them):

ADT
ADT is the leading electronic security services company in the U.S. If more than half the biggest US banks trust them, it’s also a good idea for you too. Their support is awesome and talking with them on the phone usually gets you what you’re searching at a pretty good price. Definitely recommend. Their home security and small business protection systems are top of the line – they even offer a free security review (heck, after the amount of money they expect to get from you is huge, they sure as hell should offer free reviews and they do)! You just call them, set up an appointment and a security specialist will be with you in a convenient time. Yes, their website is a bit shallow – but I guess what’s behind it is much more important than the way they present themselves on the Web. Being the biggest is often backed by some serious proof – and they have it.

I talked previously about the topic of “do burglar alarms work“, but this post will be something different.

Burglars love to go undisturbed and usually pick easy and insecure targets. For example ones with weak doors, frequently absent owners, no dog, little to no present neighbors. Your only source of protection in a situation like that is installing an alarm system – preferably an active vs. passive, but I’m not sure it will be legal in your state.

In such cases you turn to getting domestic alarm systems – preferably of good quality and fair price.

By definition, an “active alarm” is one which would disable the thief – there are such based on gas, electricity, some even spray the burglar with fuel and light them on fire! Yea, I’ve seen them and they’re damn serious. The trouble is, you may come in drunk someday and forget about the active alarm… it lights you on fire! You can pretty much see where this could go if used without caution… and it’s only recommended if there are very, very serious risks which can’t be taken into account without employing an active alarm.

All others are considered “passive” – they don’t take any action against the thieves except probably blowing their ears with a thunder-loud siren – which is something I’ve always recommended. Sure, if it goes off on a false alarm you will experience some inconvenience, but security comes with it’s own glitches, you can’t avoid that. The more security you install, the more alarm systems you set up to repel criminals, the more trouble you will have to go through in your day-to-day life.

2 years ago I got robbed – and as tragic as it was, I had to deal with it somehow.

The door was broken into and a lot of valuables were taken out – so I had to figure out a way to repel any criminals who might wish to come back and take more (there were still things they could take and probably didn’t out of a hurry). I had a choice – spend a boatload of money on security cameras and alarm equipment or buy something cheap to do the job.

Can you guess what I chose?

In this particular case I was renting the place and didn’t want to invest much into it’s security. I still had to protect myself somehow though.. so I chose to pick a fake motion-activated camera – really cool, as you pass in front of it, it would flash a tiny red light as if it was filming.

It looked exactly like this one – http://www.aliexpress.com/product-fm/488665470-FREE-SHIPPING-wholo-world-Home-office-No-induction-camera-Security-LED-Fake-Camera-wholesalers.html

I put 2 duracells in it and stuck it at the ceiling in front of my door – and trust me, it was very impressive! All my neighbors were asking me how expensive was this “security camera”, how was I storing the recorded video, etc – nobody ever suspected it was fake. Cool, huh?

Do cheap burglar alarms work well? That question has most probably crossed your mind if you’re reading this. The answer depends on the type of burglar alarm you have (or plan on buying) and on the intellectual properties of the particular criminal who may have a desire to enter your home.

The simple rule is: the cheaper, the higher the chance of failure. Yes, the alarm will work when your dog activates it accidentally but it will most probably not work when someone enters your hose with the desire to steal something.

and the answer is… YES! They do. You already know that, the question is which work best and which underperform under certain conditions. Education is always good! When searching for burglar alarms on AliExpress, look for kits with positive reviews and also look for the ones with the most sales (there’s a filter for that).

Types of burglar alarms

They are best divided by the type of the sensor used:

Indoor:

Passive infrared detectors – most commonly used, cheapest and easiest to bypass. Good to have, but not much secure.

Ultrasonic detectors - if you can, get one of these. They’re using the Dopler effect to detect motion and are very difficult to bypass.

Microwave detectors - due to the high risk of false alarms these are often combined with passive infrared detectors. If you don’t like false alarms, don’t get one.

Photo-electric beams – bypassing these is explained on this site and thus – not recommended for home use. You’ve seen them in the movies – they get bypassed there like a … child’s play. Of course it’s not as easy in real life, but hey, why risk your security?

Glass break detectors - you can’t break a glass without triggering one of these in most cases. If you can, get these on the first floors of your property. They definitely do work.

Smoke, heat, and carbon monoxide detectors - these are used to protect you from risks of human stupidity or the nature – sure, they may work if a burglar decides to light a cigarette or light your house on fire to wipe his tracks – but that’s rarely the case.

Outdoor

Vibration (shaker) or inertia sensors - you will most likely not need one, as it’s used in military installations and such. Used to detect structure attacks – such as a broken barrier, etc. They definitely do work, but are not used for burglar protection.

Passive magnetic field detection – low false alarm rate and high sensitivity causing this alarm to be one of the most effective out there.

E-field – don’t even consider buying this one for your house. It DOES NOT WORK! I mean, really – with the high chance of false alarms and high cost, it’s illogical to get one unless you’re very very paranoid.

Microwave barriers – cheap, easy to install and really hard to bypass. But it’s sensitive to weather conditions and not really useful in the winter.

Microphonic systems – you will need it if you have a chainwire fence… not likely. Cheap but prone to false alarms too.

Taut wire fence systems - does work but it’s very expensive and complex in operation. Not recommended for your average home.

Fibre optic cable - I’m not even considering to review this one. Expensive and has a very high rate of false alarms!

Besides these, integration with cctv cameras is usually a must, as well as wireless security systems usually bound with some kind of mobile network via a sim card and a mobile phone-like device. Glass break detectors are a must if you live on the first floor – get the most reliable you can buy. Complete intruder alarm kits are available all over the net too – just search for them and you’ll find them.

Just getting a detection tool won’t give you security. You might also employ some type of an access control system – regular keys are old school – RFID has it’s own vulnerabilities, but there are other electronic access devices available, look around as I will write about them soon. Fire alarms are important too – what use is there for a burglar alarm if your property turns to ashes?

You better have several different burglar detection systems installed and couple them with a really good siren – the louder, the better. Thieves love covert operations and get really freaked out by the sound of a loud siren – so get one, power it independently so it would work even if they cut the power to your house and be safe.

Alarms do work as long as you make sure they are power independent and difficult to notice – you should not advertise the presence of detection systems unless you want them to come prepared exactly for your protections – the less the burglars know, the higher the chance of failure for them and the higher security you get.

Do cheap burglar alarms work?

It really does matter what type your burglar alarm is. Try not to be cheap on this one – as it’s not about your valuables when someone breaks into your house. I’ve been through that and I know how it feels – you feel as if your house has been raped, literally – and you feel everything being ‘dirty’ and touched by someone else – trust me, in such a case you would give anything to prevent what happened.. but it’s already done and there is no going back. You will have to deal with being robbed and it’s not a pleasant feeling.

The best you can do is prepare yourself in advance – find out what the weaknesses of your house/business are and then improve them with appropriate protection. If you have windows on the first floor it really makes no sense in buying a $10 000 door security – as all it takes is to break your window, and your door security is gone. Same goes for the alarm systems you install – make sure they are independent and really, really difficult to bypass. Think of it as if you were a thief – would you notice there is an alarm installed and could you research online on how to bypass it? If you can, then probably every regular thief can, too. And you should not allow that to happen!

Burglar alarms work only when their owner/installer has a head on their shoulders and knows how to use it. They also work best when nobody knows about them except for their owner – especially the horn / siren types.

I entered an office (legally and with a permission once) – but forgot to turn off the alarm. The sound of the siren blew my mind off – and literally caused me to run out of the building immediately – as it was unbearable and I couldn’t stand the extremely loud sound of it. There was no way I could stay there and steal something, for example – it was physically impossible. Yes, sure – the thief might be “hungry” enough and still have the nerve to steal something – but you have decreased the chances of that happening at all if you’ve installed a tremendously loud siren.

Burglar alarms function best when there is an owner who is concerned with their use and their usability, or usefulness – someone, who is not afraid to invest a couple hundred dollars more into a security system which would be difficult to notice and bypass, thus difficult to overcome.

I will probably post some burglar alarms reviews on this site in the future – in the meantime, feel free to leave your comments below!

Company: The seller is on AliExpress, which is a kind of Amazon for electronics (my personal opinion is that ali is quite larger than amazon in the electronics scene, but it’s up to you to decide)

Price Range: $44-$48 (depending on the quantity of gps trackers you’re ready to buy)

Who Would Buy This: Those shopping for personal (or just any tipe of) gps trackers will find this one quite useful.

The purpose of the GPS tracker, of course, tracking your valuables – be it a living person, a pet or a moving .. target.

Pros:
Size – as you will see in the images and on the product page itself, the device is very small. It’s so small you can place it anywhere – just make sure you have a direct visibility (or indirect, but close visibility) to the sky – you know, the GPS satellites are above you, the device needs to communicate with them directly in some way.

Features:

GPS positioning individual or team
Universal worldwide
GSM 900/1800/1900MHz support
three frequency 850/900/1800/1900MHz quad-band available)
High sensitivity, new technology and most advanced GPS chip
Even in a weak signal can accurately locate the next
Under the limited space in the narrow areas such as the city works well
Compact size, smaller than a business card, well hidden, 6cmx4.9cmx1.9cm
low power consumption
Fast capture signal
Support single location and continuous tracking
Support alarm and remote monitoringSupport for speed dial button
ssupport the position of SMS and Internet queries
You can not disturb those who tracked the case of monitoring, timely tracking
The holder positioning by phone or SMS
SOS, emergency help button, a key to make a call, and accurate positioning

Cons:
well, the documentation it comes with is a bit vague – so if you’re a reader, you will miss the reading – however, the build quality is awesome and there is great seller support (they answer all e-mail queries) – you won’t miss the details much (besides, it’s just a gps tracker device)

Guarantee:
If there is a defect on the device it will be replaced immediately – the only thing you pay is the shipping cost.

Value for money?
Well, what can I say? You’re getting a personal gps tracker (with an AWESOME build quality) for just about $46!

The web is literally flooded with spy cameras.

So how do you choose the best spy camera out there?

You simply need to pick the one that’s right for you and your mission.

That’s it!

So the question goes like this: Which one is the spy cam that’s right for me?

There are plenty of mini cameras out there, it's up to you to decide which one's the right for you

The answer depends on your target, the weather, your hair length, your wrists size, your eye form, your body shape – as you can see, there are plenty of factors in choosing a spy camera.

Weather:

Factor in the weather when choosing. If it’s summer time, you might use spy glasses – especially if you’re male. same goes for picking a wrist watch spy camera, as it’s best used during summer time. If it’s winter, you better pick something you can hold with your hand, or you could use a button-type micro camera.

There are cameras which are mountable – in this case it’s important if they’re weather proof or not – make sure to factor that in your search.

Size is important – but the most important features are portability and resolution. Sensor quality is sometimes quite bad – make sure you read the specs of the cameras – the minimum resolution would be 640×480 – that’s for tiny, micro-mini spy cameras which you can compare to an ant in size. Anything larger is supposed to have a higher resolution, too.

Price: not important at all. If you’re on a budget, pick a camera which fits as closely as possible to the maximum you can afford – as else you’ll be making a compromise with quality and we don’t want that.

Looks: very important. That is closely related to build quality – if your camera is flimsy and ugly it’s more likely somebody will notice it. If it looks cheap, it will look suspicious. If your “watch camera” is looking as if you just bought it from a jewelry/high quality watch shop, you will have a higher chance of success and lower rate of camera recognition.

Where should you pick your cameras from: It depends. Amazon is an interesting place – it has a bit of everything, but it’s a bit shallow if you know what I mean – you can’t see detailed specs, detailed photos of the cameras there – besides, you will be pretty limited in terms of choice. Some cameras are un-sellable on Amazon – as they’re close to being illegal or banned from open sale. In such cases I would head directly to www.aliexpress.com – specifically, to their Security section – if you find a website which offers bigger choice, PLEASE let me know – so far I personally have not found ANY competition to AliExpress.I’ll even put my money where my mouth is – if you find a website with a greater choice of security cameras/spy equipment, let me know and I’ll send you $1000! Does that sound serious? You bet it is!

I buy from them regularly – and a LOT – and I’m very, very happy with what I’ve gotten so far.

Reviews: when picking a camera, try and read the reviews below the product options. They are indeed helpful.

Last but not least, be creative. You can buy just the “guts” of a mini spy security camera and put them in a stuffed plush animal yourself – or in a box, or in the fire alarm, in a book – and that’s going to be the perfect choice for you. Look around the room you’re targeting (or around your target, anyway) and try and think of ways to conceal the camera.

One more review! This time, for a top-notch, one of the best wireless mini cameras out there!

This one is pretty cool! It has a 9 volt battery mini adapter, which can basically allow you to place it anywhere and forget about feeding it electricity. The battery lasts for days and the sensor is pretty good – as you can see from the image, the quality is VERY good!

No matter what you throw at it, it will shoot it and will transmit it to the receiver. And 100 meters is more than enough range for most wireless camera applications, isn’t it?

Well, for such a small sensor you can’t get Full HD quality, but still the image you will get is very good for the price/size. There is nothing better / cheaper on the market anyway – the price/quality ratio is more than perfect. For God’s sake, it’s only ~ 20 USD!!!

There are thousands (literally!) of them – most are cheap trash, and just a rare gem comes from time to time. That’s usually when you’ll hear about them on my blog!

Hidden Camera Types

There are these hidden cameras which are already implanted in various devices – from microwaves to gums to watches to stuffed animals – and the second type is the raw device which needs to be wired to a power source and implanted by yourself (kind of a DYI). It only depends on your technical skill/resources which one you’ll by and implant. There are even cameras embedded into pens – such as this motion detecting high resolution pen camera!

Usually if you absolutely need to make sure the camera will not be found until the operation is over you need of the second type – as it needs to be placed into an object the subject of your investigation already knows and trusts – their own lamp, their own fire alarm, their own light switch, etc. You can’t just bring a new object into their environment and expect it will not be closely inspected. Especially with more cautious people (if one expects to be under surveillance, they will be on their toes all the time).

If you’re after an un-savvy user you can just buy something ready made and place it in their surroundings. You can even present it as a gift, just make sure it’s an item they will place in such a position as to allow you good view. When placing the camera make sure you’ll have a way to quickly retrieve it later – as if you don’t retrieve it you’re leaving evidence. Even if it’s found years after the job has been done an investigation can be initiated (actually, it will definitely be) and you most probably will get caught if the people after you are smarter than you are.

If you’re careful not to leave any traces – wipe off the serial number of the device and wipe all fingerprints off the surfaces you touched you will decrease the risk to yourself, of course. You still have the risk of someone seeing you entering and leaving, besides – can you imagine if one has planted another camera in the same area before you? It’s not like it hasn’t happened before – it’s funny and could be tragic at the same time, so be careful.

Playing with hidden cameras is like playing with fire

And the analogy is correct – professional do tame fire and can even play with it – and newcomers usually get badly burnt. You absolutely *need* to educate yourself before you start playing with hidden cameras. In another post I’ve recommended a really good book – and I’ll recommend it again:

[box type="info"]

Read this book:

Digital Video Surveillance and Security – as if you rely only on the Internet to educate you, you will stay ignorant. Read more!

[/box]

The more you read on the subject, the more you know, the better you are prepared, the less risk you pose to yourself and to others. Don’t save a few bucks and hours on education – that will be one of the smartest investments you’ll make.

Then of course you’ll know what kind of equipment to buy, how to use it, you’ll be prepared to follow the law (or bend it slightly).

Over the course of time I will post some pretty decent gear reviews on this blog – and this will include hidden cameras, of course. Spy gear is one of my hobbies, and I try to make the best of it and help others when I can.

[box type="note" style="rounded"]Oh, I almost forgot – there’s one really cool tip I wanted to share – if you want to see all kinds of such cameras, the quickest way is to fire up Google, type “hidden camera” into the search box and then click “Image search” on the top left corner of the screen. Quite amazing what a simple search can do for you, huh?[/box]

My reviews are pretty popular nowadays – and I can allow myself some brave comments on the topic. You can buy one (or more) – but…

Does it make you a spy?

And you already know the answer. To use one, you need to get creative – you need to know what you’re after and what results you’re targeting. For covert filming you need tiny, micro cameras with a stable power supply which you can plant in a difficult to see location – usually in fire detectors, air conditioners, toys, wall light switches, etc – anything which has holes in it by default and these holes would not cause suspicion.

One other thing to be cautious about – you need a clean entrance and a clean exit – this means you got to enter unnoticed, plant the camera without leaving your fingerprints! – and be able to come again and take the camera back. A successful covert operation is one nobody ever knows about.

[box type="note"]A good way of not leaving fingerprints is to “swipe” your fingers off anything they touch. It goes like this: you touch something, but before you lift your fingers, you “swipe” them – as if you’re trying to clean something with your fingers, and indeed you are – you’re cleaning away your fingerprints![/box]

People can’t just spy on others for no reason – first of all it’s illegal and second – it can get you in some real trouble with people you don’t want to deal with.

There are two ways of using a spy camera – professionally and risky. If you want to get professional, you need to learn.

[box type="info"]

Read this book:

Digital Video Surveillance and Security – as if you rely only on the Internet to educate you, you will stay ignorant. Read more!

[/box]

Hopefully, you’ve followed my advice and you got the book – at least you will know how to protect yourself from sweet prison time before you get into planting cameras and filming footage!

Now, which camera should you choose?

Rule number 1: Trust me. Or at least read my reviews carefully and think before you buy – I’m picking the best gear out there at the best prices, but you should also use that round ball on your shoulders, right? Come here regularly, as I’ll be posting some serious gear every couple of days. You can also subscribe to my RSS feed (top of the page, top right corner) – this will keep you posted. Soon I’ll be adding a newsletter to this site too – make sure you subscribe to it as it will be one of the main sources of information to my readers.

Rule number 2: don’t be cheap. Of course, I pick the best prices but I also take care to review only *the best spy cameras on the market*. That’s it, and I don’t make compromises. Look for build quality and specs – always get a better cam / microphone / gear if you can afford it – it will pay for itself in the future.

Rule number 3: never ever do anything illegal. You will get caught and you will get in trouble – if not the first time, sometime later in your “spy life”. Be careful and obtain legal permission to use them – or at least have some really valid reason – like preventing crimes, etc. This is probably the most important rule. If you’re not a professional and you’re not educated about what you’re doing you will make mistakes and you will get caught. There’s no “maybe” or “probably” – it will definitely happen. So don’t make anything stupid, please – don’t go planting spy cameras if you don’t have the permission to!

Now, if you really are after some serious spy gear, head over this link – hidden spy cameras – I know, it’s not Amazon, but I use this site very regularly - and you can bet the gear they sell is top notch. We all know our electronics are built in China – be it Apple or some noname brand – just trust me once, get something from there (something nice!) and you’ll thank me for many years later! The guys at AliExpress are pretty big – I don’t know exactly how big they are, but they are indeed competing with Amazon at much lower prices (you’re kinda buying from the source with no middle men).

So what are you waiting for? Go explore!

It’s as big as a coin! Chargeable, miniature, it will get the job done. This cell phone bug is the smallest I’ve ever seen – and if you insert a sim card to which you have unlimited calls, you’re in a very good situation.

How it works:

You charge it, insert a sim, place it wherever you want and get away. Then you call the number of the bugged sim card, the device “picks up the phone” without ringing and you’re listening to everything happening in the room!

As with all my reviews, here’s my personal opinion: it’s awesome! I put it under the desk with a bit of duct tape and it just stayed there. The bug is light enough to be easily attachable to any surface with a bit of glue or duct tape (Duct tape ftw!) – and it will stay there long after its batteries are dead.

Of course, you are responsible for your own actions – and you should never listen or spy on someone without their permission.

Right.

Especially security toys such as this one. I for one know of many stories when interesting things have been filmed using such cams!

Concealing a camera in a pen is clever in many situations – some of them might include cheating at exams or covert operations – it all depends on you.

My tests showed excellent video / stills quality – for such a small cam, the 640×480 resolution is awesome (and can you believe I got it for just $12 from here – Pen Camera ? )

I can’t imagine a better use for my $12 – have you ever seen a cheaper pen camera? And by cheap I certainly don’t mean “cheap build” as this is not the case. It feels solid and “classy” – just sleek little pen a spy would use! People will never even suspect you’re filming them.

Awesome! I certainly recommend. Get one!

And if you ever wondered how would a video footage from this cam look like:
